Sounds similar to Nas saying...Hip Hop is dead...!

how so?

you know people are out in the hood doing whats right, not all of our people subscribe to the non-sense that we see. your an example of that...! the majority of our people do good. it's the 800 pound gorilla in the room...MEDIA SENSATIONALISM and CORPORATE INFLUENCE, that skews the perception towards the negative. once you subscribe to that, voluntarily or involuntarily(subconscious), you begin to feel overwhelmed, apathetic, and disconnected from yourself and your people. Violence is not solely physical, it can be psychological as well.

My analogy comparing your post to what Nas said about hip hop is the use of rhetoric. in my personal experience, most of the people i know didn't really listen to his album. they were turned off by the title. By the end of the album he was talking about how hip hop is alive and well. his premise began with the negative ending with the positive. knowing Nas's background, i can say that he knew the response to his claim would be met with resistance, and disagreement. it's the esoteric technique of giving life to something supposedly dead.

problem: urban/'hood decay and blight.

the solution to Urban/Hood decay and blight is ourselves.
We need to accept responsibility.
The Streets are dirty, CLEAN them i.e. When you see a piece of trash pick it up.

When you see Drugs/Hoes on a street corner, call the popo EACH TIME and when that eventually stops working (as it will), grab a large group of friends (10 or so) to bring constant ATTENTION to that street corner. you don't even HAVE to confront anyone.
Bring Recorders (Video and/or audio) with you to Document the proceedings.

When you just hang out every day close enough to the goings on, to SEE/Record what's going on, it WILL make them uncomfortable..

Once they are uncomfortable there, they WILL move on..

More than anything, teach your KIDS or friends KIDS clean wholesome habits. When they learn that throwing trash on the ground is morally bad, they'll know it's not right to do so. Much less Drugs.

Kids will also bust out people that they SEE throwing trash to the ground. My Daughter 'innocently' calls people 'litterbugs' because she sees me doing and saying it to people. And of course SHE doesn't want to be called a litterbug. We carry grocery store plastic bags with us to the parks (when the weather permits), so when we encounter trash we have something to pick it up with and with which to dispose it.

When people see YOU doing stuff like that, the ones who CARE will also start doing it. It's just that not many want to be THE FIRST, or be the ONLY ONE to get their hands dirty so to speak... And it'd be dangerous to mess with the Drug/Hoe crowd all by your self or out numbered.. So you DON'T wanna do that..

Complaining about it or even worse, Ignoring it will not make it somehow go away..
